Chickens and parakeets?

I have seven hens and six chicks (older chicks going on five weeks and younger chicks going on three weeks). For a long time I have really wanted parakeets. On Sunday we got the cage. That night I couldn't sleep because I suddenly thought: "What about the chickens?" I know you're not supposed to mix flocks because it's a danger to both flocks, and if there are birds in my room it will be hard to wash up enough to keep it separate from my hens. I have a friend who kept birds all her life and she also had chickens. Her chickens never had a problem. I really want these birds, but if it's a danger to my chickens I guess I won't get them. I need reason-supported opinions, please!

Unless you have that big of a flock of chickens indoors as house chickens, you should be ok. (Presuming parakeet in indoor bird only)

Keep one pair of shoes as 'chicken only shoes' to wear around your flock outdoors. Leave those shoes by backdoor and NEVER wear indoors. Reason - chicken poo.

If your parakeet is indoors, it'll not get exposed to anything the chickens might carry (or vice versa).

I take our parrotlet in her cage outdoors for some sunshine periodically. While she's generally on a table near the chicken run, there's *thankfully* never been any issue with cross-diseases. (I don't put the parrotlet cage on the ground - don't want ants or beetles indoors!)

Hope this might help.
