I have 13 hens, 2 roosters and 3 Pekins (I believe 2 Females and a Drake) they were all hatched in March so they are now starting to breed and I’ve recently got my first few duck eggs and one hen started laying. Now I’m reading horror stories about keeping a drake around hen chickens. Is it going to be necessary for me to separate the ducks from the chickens? Here’s my set up and the ducks sleep on the coop floor at night.

If they are all being friendly to each other then they are fine together

shew...so far they have been all good. Chickens usually eat first then the ducks and chickens coop up at night and then ducks go in after and so far I’ve only witnessed chicken to chicken and duck to duck breeding and none of girls are missing feathers.

I see you have a Great Pyrneese too!! Mine just turned 1 in May and she’s struggling to not be too rough with my goats so my birds are fenced off from her for now. One did get out a few times and was fine 2 of the times and then the 3rd time I found her badly injuried with a wing gone and she didn’t make it. I hate it but I think my pup did it...I really hope it’s just because she’s so young still and we have hope of someday all being able to free range together.

My great pyrenees is actually a great pyrenees/anatolian shepherd mix and she is sweet and gentle. She is less than a year old. Her name is Dakota and I have her to protect my sheep when shes older. She is friendly to my chickens too. Your great pyrenees probably just needs a little training and she will probably be great!

Your roosters will likely help to keep straying ducks in line, but your male to female ratio between the ducks is probably too little - a lot of folks recommend at least 3-4 females per male, 4-6+ if you have more than one male in a flock. You might want to add one or two more female ducks, even if it's just to take some strain off your existing females and has nothing to do with your chickens

I raised my chicks and ducks together and they still all get along - in fact one of my 4 roosters hangs with the ducks and protects both the hens and drakes. When they eat, the chickens go first and then the ducks. They don't seem to mind.

Any training advice. She does great with the goats when I’m around it’s when I walk away for just a couple minutes then she wants to run after them and she puts the back of their neck In her mouth. She doesn’t hurt them but this is not okay!! I only let her around the chickens by putting her on a leash and walking her into their run.
