Chickens and rain

No, you did not do anything wrong. And no the rain did not kill her. Chickens know more about being a chicken than we will ever know. If you have shelter open and available to their choice, they will self monitor and go in if they need to do so.

I think your chicken was dying, hence in a way, leaving the flock by not going into the coop. In my experience, chickens are not long lived animals, and sometimes have internal issues that eventually catch up to them. Remind your son, you gave them a good life, and that as animal husbandry, that is all we can do and that is our responsibility. I swear it is always the favorite that dies early, ugh! The mean old biddy lives forever!

With my grandchildren, we talk about keeping the flock, but within that flock, chickens come and go. With death, one can get new chicks which is always fun. My granddaughter calls it the circle of life.

I'm sorry about your bird, I recently lost my favorite girl and totally cried. *hugs*
That being said, mine will stay out of its a light rain, but a downpour or anything serious sends them running for cover.
