chickens and rain

new to chickens -my chickens do not go inside out of the rain. Instead they huddle under an overhang. Is it ok if they get wet?

I don't know the answer either. It gets very hot here and I run the sprinkler for my girls and they like to run through it on their own occasionally . Maybe they just don't like to get drenched? I'm new to this, too. Good luck!

My silly flock was standing OUTSIDE in the MIDDLE of the worst storm here for 2012 - 90mph winds, driving rains going sideways - and my three broodies and their young chicks as well as the rest of the flock were standing there looking at the sky Dufus!

Nope, getting wet doesn't harm them at all. If anything, it helps with 'itchy' skin from feather dander. Rinses it all out.

Mine used to not come out of the coop in the rains - not sure what changed, but they now don't mind weather related items at all. Flock is now just about 18mo. Although that white carpet-like stuff when it gets cold, now THAT's still suspect.....(snow!). But since it happened so infrequently last winter, I'll likely be re-introducing them to it this winter.

ours (ranging from 5 weeks to 1 year) absolutely love the rain and will stand in it til soaking wet.... it's never harmed them. Just think about before they were domesticated.

Mine just wander around like nothing's happening, no matter how hard it's raining, wind blowing, thunder, lightening, etc. They couldn't care less about being wet! So the old phrase "Mad as a wet hen" doesn't apply to mine LoL

I had to chase mine indoors when it started HAILING a couple of weeks ago! Dumb clucks... I was afraid somebody would lose an eye due to the size of the hailstones!
Mine stand out in the rain too. I used to worry about them, but I figure they'll go in if it gets bad enough.

Thanks for all the good feed back, i'm learning sooo much. Love having chickens. Even my husband who is resistant to the idea, enjoys watching them.

ok so I am going to let mine out they are screaming to get out glad to know it will not hurt them but actually help itchy skin ...sweet plus my frizzle chickens look very funny wet

My chickens are mad at me, it is cold and rainy and I did not take them out today. They have a large coop, maybe as large as a bedroom, it is part of an old barn. We built them an outside enclosure, but it has no protection from the elements. Just enough to keep them for getting run over or eaten by a coyote. Well, my rooster is yelling at me all morning. After reading all the responses I guess I better let me out. They are smart, the enclosure is about 20-30 feet from their coop and they know they best get the butts in there. I wish it were closer to the coop, but it would cover the driveway. We also move it around so they always have fresh grass and no mud. They love digging holes, so about every 3 weeks we move it.
