Chickens and the cat

Do you have a rooster?

We just acquired one from our neighbor and he is VERY protective of his girls.

When the cats come around - he makes lots of noise and gets in between them an the hens.

I was worried about cats too. My neighbors cats are outside a lot. I used to see a cat in our yard now and then. But since we've started building our chicken coop I've seen this one cat in our yard nearly every day. I don't know if it's just that we're outside more with the weather warming up and working on the coop or if it has made our yard it's 2nd home, but it has me worried for my chickens. They aren't even out there yet and this cat seems way too interested in what's going on.

cats arn't completly bad they keep the mice population down wich saves on feed. and they can keep down the weasle population

They're also loving, devoted pets - just saying.

Mine seem to have largely lost interest in the chickens. The one cat that gave my chooks a swipe to the bum now just sis back and watches them from a distance. Still, I'll be keeping my chicks locked up in their run during the day until they're quite a bit bigger just to be safe.
