Chickens and the eclipse

What are they saying about traffic in path of totality...is it going to be crazy? We'd like to drive up and experience it but wonder if there'll be a bumper to bumper jam....

I don't think traffic will be too bad, most of the people will be settled in a day or two before. The hotels and motels around here are booked solid so it's looking like people actually planned ahead.

I'm hoping they don't look up. All those horror stories about not looking at the eclipse still have me a bit wary. I know it's fine when it's total but not fine when it's getting there. It should be very interesting, I plan on posting pictures and video here so anyone who missed it can watch, or for those with schadenfreude.

I seriously doubt that the chicken is going to look up to see the eclipse unless it is in the form of a bird of prey that's the only time I see the chickens look up! However since I live in Oregon on the coast, I have 20 chickens that I'll be watching to see if they even pay attention… Which I doubt seriously, Bill I will advise if I do see anything or any difference in their actions

Wow that's a pretty bird! My little flock is pretty curious about everything even with the treat bowl diversion I'm going to have a few gazers.Maybe I should make them one of those little shoeboxes......just kidding, or am I?

We are not getting the point. The birds are not likely to appreciate the astronomical process, but they will respond to the aberration in lighting. The response will be like a compressed night during what is otherwise the middle of the day. Where I am it will be getting dark as night. Will my free-range birds hustle a 100 yards back to roost, find a roost near where they are, set up to roost on the ground, or continue as if nothing is happening during the event? If you cannot see something, then you are flat out not looking.

My guess is they are going to look up to see what is going on. As you say they are fairly used to the sun being there at around 2:30 ish and like yourself I'm in the direct path for totality for over two minutes which means the only light will be a slight bit of corona. ..it's going to be dark! I don't think anyone is going to roost im thinking there will be a bunch of chickens looking skyward. That's my guess, it will definitely be interesting to see what actually does occur with them.

Well what state do you live in? Our closest points will be north or east of Kansas City, and that could be crowded....We may try going further southeast out into rural areas.

I'm in the upstate of South Carolina, you know there's a big event happening when folks are flocking here.

I'm in upstate SC as well. Think I'm going to try to video my chooks to see what they end up doing.
