I have 8 chickens, Red Star and Rhode Island Reds I believe. They are very good layers, I normally get between 6 to 8 eggs a day,
They have 3 nesting boxes but they usually end up using the same one. Lately one or two of them have been making holes in the
eggs. They dont eat it they just destroy it. Does anyone know why this happens?? and what I could do?

Collect the eggs as fast as you can, and put golf balls in the nests. Preferably rub them in the dirt so they are not so bright.

The same thing was happening to mine. I would find a crack from them pecking at the egg. I put a golf ball in (as said in the previous post) and I have not had a problem since. Good luck!

Quality control. Hen is testing the shell to see if it is a good enough egg to hatch. I have a rir that does this for a couple of days before going broody.

Oh!!!! Well that makes sense! I've put the golf balls in I'm sure that will fool them (they arent too bright!)
Thanks
