My flock has always spent most of their days in the chicken run. Occasionally they were given a few hours supervised free range time. Over the past several weeks I've been increasing their free range (and unsupervised

) time and now they spend most of their day completely free. This past week they discovered the garage and like hanging out there. But heres the problem we've encountered, they have no fear of cars. They run back and forth while we're driving in and out of the drive way and I'm worried that we're going to end up hitting them. Is there anything that I can do? I've tried honking and they just tilt their heads at the car and then continue what they were doing

This might help but if you have an enclosed run for protection of predictors, example chicken wire. I hung bells on the top part so when birds land on it or a squirrel, they hear the bells go off and run inside. Now when they hear a bell ring they're alarmed and Causious. Maybe if ur pulling in, keep a bell with you and ring it to shoo them away. Then they might get used to the car sound-bells coming, think its a predictor and run away from it

Besides a snake that got caught trying to go into the chicken run my flock has never had a predator come at them. I just have deer netting over their chicken run to keep the wild birds out.

I even tried, although I didn't want to have to do this, to give them a small bit of scratch away from the cars before leaving but even that didn't work. As soon as I walked away the little buggers followed me and we were at square one again. I'm really hoping that eventually they will just learn but we have people that will come flying down the driveway and who also aren't use to the chickens free ranging. I'm already so scared of them being out alone and then to add cars to it

Yea giving them scratch before you leave will give them the idea of "hey she's walking to her car she has food!" I don't know if they sell these at the farm store but it would be so neat if they had caution chicken sign to post on your property.
But you should try the bell thing it does work. Or at least it has for me and my chickens are stubborn :yiipchick
