Yesterday I lost 3 of my 1 year old chickens to green tomatoes and tomato vines, now the other 22 most are looking ok small loss of appetite, some are pale and have diarrhea with a loss of appetite.
Is there anything I can do for them or do I just let this run it's course?
The chickens ate the tomatoes on the 25th and died the next day.

The person that fed them the tomatoes didn't know didn't know they were poisonous, so no freaking out on me please.

Thanks

have the tomatoes been sprayed or dusted with insecticide or pesticides?

My chickens eat the leaves and green tomatoes without a problem.

I learned early on yrs ago that Tomato vines and green mators could cause serious problems even death, I think I found it on the what not to feed them Thread. It's nobodys fault just an honest mistake, We know you have learned a valued lesson to bad about the birds though.

I won't be freaking out on you, I didn't know tomato plants and green tomatoes were poisonous- and I've been raising chickens and tomatoes a long time!

I am so sorry you lost your chickens, and I hope someone can soon help the rest.

Hopefully your others feel better. Yeah You are going to want them to pass everything. Just make sure they have allot of feed and fresh water. After a day or so and they still have diarea then try giving them oatmeal(dry rolled oats). That will help dry up their poo and help make it a normal consistancy

It would be a good thing to have a talk to whomever fed your birds the tomatoes. Make sure he/she knows that they need to ask you what is to be fed to them here on out.
That way it doesnt happen again.. Make sure there is a fence around the plants to. to keep the birds and people out.

They know better now, I just assumed it was the green tomatoes too, they were completely green. There weren't any pesticides on the tomato plants, they have toxins in them that can kill chickens as well as cats and dogs (I think it can make humans sick as well).
I'll try the oatmeal and see if I have any yogurt in the fridge, thank you so much

We eat fried green tomatos all the time here. Perhaps it's just the vine? Or is it the cooking that renders them safe?

my birds love green tomatoes but yes the vines are toxic. they are in the night shade family just like potatoes, peppers and of course poke salad and the dreaded belladonna. a lot fo night shade fuit is edible but the stalks and stems are usually very toxic if enough is ingested. but yeah when my momma brings over her dumpings from tomato canning its like a holiday for the chickens
