Hello Backyardchicken Community!

I am so happy to have come across this site!
My name is Hayley and I am a new chicken Mama as of late March ‘19. We started off with 6 chicks we brought home. A couple of months in we discovered one of the hens to be a he, Punky Rooster. Sadly, we could not keep him and he was rehomed to a close friend; he’s now living it up on a beautiful farm with plenty of ladies! We were left with 3 black sexlinks and 1 Barred Rock; confirmed to be hens. Then we were surprised to have what we we were told was an Ameracauna bantam, who grew into a beautiful fluffy white Silkie! We were elated and grew so very fond of Pearl. She had a rough start with a coccidia infection we discovered after bringing her to the Vet. Then when she grew bigger, one morning we found her wedged between the stall wall and a large galvanized brooder tub. She appeared to be very injured, dragging wings and couldn’t walk; we were devastated and rushed her to an ER clinic. She got some meds and recovered just fine. Then shortly after... the cockadoodledooing started; once again we were devastated to realize we would soon need to rehome our sweet and beautiful Pearl (Percy). A couple of days prior to bringing Percy to his new home, everyday we were outside spending as much time as I could with my favorite little guy, Percy and his lady friends, (Mabel, Clementine, Trudy and Winnie). They were enjoying free range and Percy was getting busy with the ladies. I went around the barn to grab a handful of scratch, refill water and in a matter of minutes, I come around the corner because I heard the oddest sound, that I knew was not a chicken sound. It was a hawk and it had Percy pinned. I won’t share the details. But he was a fighter and after many attempts of screaming and crying at the hawk, trying to get it to leave, it was just too late to save my friend. I was absolutely heartbroken. I spent the next day collecting all of his beautiful feathers from the yard in hopes to make a pillow we could all hug. Then after a few days of the family mourning. I had the crazy thought to collect eggs and try to hatch them to carry on Pearls’ (Percy) legacy and have a part of him still with us! So here I am, trying to learn everything I possibly can about chickens, with the will to do all that I can to have healthy and happy chickens.
When I’m not obsessively learning about chickens, hanging outside on the ground talking to the chickens and annoying my boyfriend with chicken humor and puns, which his 11 and 13 year old love, I am a Veterinary Technician seasoned in Large Animal, Equine, Canine and Feline species. Other than our 4 remaining beautiful hens, I have a bunny, (Buhnaynay) rescued 2 years ago, 2 cats, (Juniper and Willow) we adopted 4 years ago and a chihuahua x French Bulldog brother and sister, (Penny and Ollie) adopted 10 years ago! And hopefully a chick on the way! We attempted to hatch 25 eggs and we have one survivor who is doing well and it’s almost hatch day. All I can do is hope that the hatch is successful and we’ll have a piece of Percy in our lives again! I really look forward to learning, sharing and hearing others shares. I am so excited to be a part of the backyardchicken Community; I have learned so much already!

Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! I have a good feeling about your one surviving egg. Star looking for a place to secure a couple siblings for it to brood with. In fact, I would get them just before hatch time and keep them in the same room nearby. It will help encourage the baby to hatch, hearing the other chirps. I just had only one egg hatch from my first attempt. Shipped eggs took too long in the mail, so most weren't viable. When I knew the one was going to hatch, I got 3 young sibling for it. They were a week old on hatch day, but it worked out great. I could hear one of the chicks talking to the one in the egg. They had a special sound just for each other. It was amazing! Chickens are social creatures, so again, I think you need to think about this.
