Chickens can play dead when hunted

I have 7 dogs and 3 of them killed 5 out of my 8 chickens but me and my family thought that the three that survived were dead . We found out they were playing dead right in time before they were accidentally buried alive. It just happened today March 26th 2024.

Omg now I'm thinking "please don't let me have ever buried a live chicken" . I'm glad they let you know before it was too late. That's nerve wracking. I'll never be able to bury one again without thoroughly examining them. Which I do anyway, but now I'll be extra worried. Thanks for the info, had no idea this was a thing.

Sounds like they are in shock. Do they have any visible wounds that need to be treated?

Check them all over carefully for wounds. Treat for shock: put them ina dark quiet place and give them electrolyte water. If you dont have any you can make some with a cup of water 2 tsp sugar a pinch of salt ad a pinch of baking soda

How long was it between the time they killed the chickens and the time you buried?

Yes, they can play dead. Starting as chicks when all else fails they will freeze and try to blend into the environment. What do you plan to do to keep them safe from your dogs?
