I came home from work today to find one of my chicken's with a bloody head. Upon closer look, the back part of her comb somehow was torn from her head. It's now flapping around (still attached in the front). There is no fresh blood coming out, but it is definately an open wound. I have two other hens. So my questions 1. Is a comb womb serious, 2. Is there anything I should do for her, and 3. is she okay to stay in with the other two hens. I really have no idea what to do here.

Watch the other hens carefully. If they aren`t pecking the wound, it should heal OK. If it is real floppy, or if it starts bleeding and won`t stop, you might wanna dub her, that means cut the rest of it off. If bleeding persists, you can use baking flour to stop it. If she is OK at roost time, she should be fine.......Pop

Thank you so much! I have been so worried about her. The other two don't seem to be paying too much attention to her as of now. I'll be watching her tonight to see if she roosts. She seems pretty happy out there pecking the ground. Will her comb stay floppy, or turn to dead skin and fall off, or what? I only have three, but they have had more than their fair share of issues.

Hard to diagnose without a pic, but generally there is enough bloodflow to a floppy comb so that it heals fine, but will probably remain floppy. It should be well on it`s way to scabbing by morning. That`s a good thing......Pop

My Cuckoo Maran had that happen to her when she was young. The end was barely hanging on by a small amount of skin and turned all blue/black, it looked like frostbite it was scary. I decided just to put neosporin on it. It worked and eventually the bruising went away and returned to full color. It is very floppy now and looks like she's wearing a hat... she's pretty silly with it. She'll flop it around to see around it, mostly it made her really scared of the others and now she's at the bottom of the pecking order even though she's the biggest hen with the largest eggs.
