Chickens coming Monday!

I come from a long line of farmers and ranchers, and I have, for the first 47 years of my life, let them down. This changes Monday. I have four hens coming from Rent a Chicken, together with a coop, feed, and advice I hope I won't need. They are the red star breed. I've seen mixed reviews about their temperament, but if they don't work out after six months they'll come and take everything back. For the last couple months I've been devouring Youtube videos and reading up on everything chicken.

I'm also starting a garden for the first time, a giant 31" tall Birdie raised bed. I have plants I raised from seed sitting in a giant bin waiting to be transplanted. I belong to a group called "Strenuous Life", a men's group sort of like boy scouts. One of the badges is backyard farmer and I'm working on several requirements for the badge, including raising chickens. After sitting in front of a computer all day I'm trying to get my butt up and outside more often, and the garden and chickens make me do that whether I want to or not!

I have a family of four including me, my wife, and two teenagers. Our standard poodle and Bengal kitty round out the family unit. I already have been working our poodle but he'll be a challenge for sure. I work from home, so will have plenty of time to hang out with the girls and get to know them.

I joined BYC because it looks like an active forum with knowledgeable folks!

Welcome to BYC. I'd love to see pictures of your poodle and your bengal!

They're best buds. Sometimes Scout (the poodle) gets fancy cuts, but we keep it short all around.

Nala just looks like a little jungle kitty. She's relatively new to the household, just came in around November last year. We had an ocicat before her, but he escaped and unfortunately didn't survive the crazy drivers on the road by our house.

Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies! I always check in the "What's New" section as well at the top of this page. This way I can read how I may have a similar question or help give some advice.
