I have two 5 month old Polish Pullets, they are truly the dumbest chickens I have ever had. Blondie would start to walk and not stop till she ran into something like the side of the house and then just stand there not knowing what to do for up to 20 minutes. Sophia was stupid but so sweet she became my absolute favorite chicken, she loves being held follows me everywhere and just adorable. Last Friday night when I went to put up the birds both Sophie and Blondie were no where to be found. I spent an hour trying to find them with no luck, no signs of predators or feathers or anything out of the ordinary. Blondie I wasn't too sad about since I do believe there was something wrong with her but Sophie was my favorite bird so I was totally depressed.
Saturday about 10am my door bell rings and a neighbor like 4 houses away asks if I know who's bird this was and low and behold there is Sophie in cage. The neighbor tells me that they found her wondering around their property and ran right up to them ready to be picked up. I was so elated I could jump since my darling bird came back and being that we live in he desert near a wash and have coyotes galor it was a miracle
So then Tuesday morning I go out and let the birds out and give Sophie some extra love since I have been trying to get her into the big hen coop but she prefers the babies smaller coop and she had spent the night in the big coop and lost a feather or two from my bratty top hen. I go inside and make my husband pancakes since it was his birthday and then go out with the left overs to give the birds the scraps (maybe 45 minutes later) and I cant find Sophie, again I look everywhere. I had to go to work so I figure she will be there when I get home but that night she was gone.
Wednesday I look for her in the morning but no signs and by the end of the day I figure that there is no hope. Tonight I come home from work and go out to the girls and here comes Sophie running up acting like nothing happened. I have NO idea where she has been for the past 4 days! So now I figure I am going to make her a collar and dog tag that says "my brain is the size of a pea, if found please call ***-***-****" that or keep her on a leash. I have two acres for them to graze and forage so I hate keeping her confined in a little run when she can be out with the rest of the birds keeping the crickets under control. They say cats have 9 lives but I think Sophie has 9 lives.
