I thought I would never start laughing this morning when I went the barn to collect eggs and noticed the funniest thing I ever saw a rooster do. I have a chain-link pen inside the barn where I put the baby chicks when they cone out of the brooder, so they can acclimate to their new home and run in and out at will, but the adult birds can not hurt them. I saw a rooster gently pick up a tiny chick by the back of the neck and try to do what roosters do. Only, being that the chick was so tiny compared to the rooster, it's feet barely reached the rooster's throat and the act of mating would be impossible. He stood there for a minute, chick in beak, figured something was wrong with this idea, looked around to see if any other chicken had noticed, and must have been embarrassed. He then very gently put the chick down and slowly walked away, but if chickens can blush, I think he did.
When I came inside laughing and tole my husband what I had seen, he reminded me about a young rooster we had about 6 years ago when we first started raising chickens, that spent about 10 minutes trying to mate with a hen on a windy day before he realized it was a plastic bag and not a hen at all. That really was funnier yet.
I am sure you all have just as funny stories to tell about your birds, so why not share your stories so we can all start our day with a chuckle?

I go out one morning to let the girls out. One, a black Orpington, was broody. I look in the nest and see this:

Yes, she's on her head. Her vent is sort of under the leaf and her body is facing the other way. Looking at me as though she were in a perfectly normal pose and can't figure out what I'm laughing at.

Wow! So funny!

Feeding the chickens just now reminded me that a few days ago, after filling the feeders, Red, the rooster stuck his head into the top of the feeder to eat, then as his head began to descend back into the food, he crowed into the feed!
