Some chickens can go rather quickly from Mareks, but most will have symptoms for a bit. Some will last for weeks. The necropsy by the state vet or local veterinary college would really be helpful. In a few states they are free, and some will euthanize a sick chicken at no extra cost. ...

What state are you in?



One thing I want to share is when considering a necropsy or taking a stab at treating, whether with antibiotics, anthelminths or whatever. The treatment will skew or render the results of the necropsy inconclusive.

Here is the request on our vet school website and I'm sure all labs will have similar statements.

Collection and Preparation of Specimens
Necropsy: Live, sick, untreated animals that show typical clinical signs, along with dead animals that have not undergone decomposition or treatment, are the specimens of choice. Dead animals should be necropsied as soon as possible after death. If size permits, animals should be refrigerated until necropsied. The owner should be encouraged to bring animals to the laboratory when the veterinarian cannot. Submission of more than one animal, when possible, will increase the chances of a rapid, accurate diagnosis.
