Chickens Dying Suddenly

Good morning,

I am hoping someone can help me troubleshoot this. I have a flock of Brahma's that I have raised from Chicks back in April 24. So they are about 8 months old now. Started with 32 and 5 have died all within the past few months. Did not lose them at chick stage. They do not appear to have killed one another as there is no sign of injury. They have a large coop. I converted an old horse stall in my barn. It is well ventilated. The run is 8ftx20ft. No bad looking diarrhea other than a few light brown more liquid bowel movements. My research tells me that is normal. They only eat feed now at this point as I figured maybe the scraps I was giving them was causing my issue.

Anyhow they don't show any sign, one night they will be fine and then the next day they are dead. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. As a side note I live in Alberta Canada where our winters get very cold -20 to -30 Celsius at the lowest and I have not provided supplemental heat as recommended by other chicken keepers I know. Any thoughts on this are appreciated as well. Just had one die yesterday and we are just coming out of a cold snap.

Sorry for your losses. Two thoughts come to mind. One, can you install a camera so you can see what might be happening? (Are they roostiing or huddling on the floor still? If huddling, could a chick be getting crushed during the night? A camera might reveal this.)

Two, can you send a body in for a necropsy? I'm sorry I have no info on where to send one in for this sevice in Canada. Maybe one of our Educators can help, I'll tag one. You'd probably need to keep it cold, not frozen.

Sorry I can't be of more assistnce.

Sorry for your loss. It would be good to examine your chickens closely for lice or mites. Is their bedding kept dry and fresh? Do they have a closed up coop, or some overhead ventilation? The temperature sounds brutal. What do you feed them? Are their crops emptying by morning? Have they been laying eggs? Here is a contact for getting a necropsy, the best way to find a cause of death:
