I had two chickens, both 8 months old, die within hours. One about 6 weeks ago and one today. Hazel who passed away a few hours ago was lethargic on the roost, I took her inside, she took one bite of eggs and blueberry and a couple sips of water, and I gave her some vitamins.
I felt some grit in her crop but she pooped during the night. I thought it was sour crop, gave her water with syringe, massaged her crop, tried to make her throw up but nothing. I noticed her eyes were closing more and more. I took her inside, wrapped her in a blanket, and was just holding her, and then she just passed away.
Pebble was a similar situation, she passed away 6 weeks ago, thought she was a bit lethargic, gave her vitamins, she ate her eggs with blueberries and chicken mash, she was find, so I put her back in the run, then I got a call from my husband that she passed away. There are no signs of injuries, no nasal discharge, no lice, no mites, no egg bound, no water belly, no neurological issues both were able to walk. The only common denominator is both had a bit of poop, were lethargic, comb and waddle a bit pale but that's about it.
I dewormed all of them about a month ago because I found tapeworms but since then there no signs of any worms.
I feed Nutrena All Flock feed and Scratch and Peck Layer Mash in two separate feeders. I got a third feeder with Mash feed in the coop. I only had 11 Chickens so plenty of feeders. I give fresh water every morning, and clean out the roosting shelf every morning. I do put in Iron Horse Poultry Egg Enhancer in their feed for several month now. I do put occasionally Nutritional Yeast in the feed.
One thing that they had in common beside sudden death, was that I let them out of the run to enjoy the larger fenced back yard. We do have lots of wild birds especially little Finches.
I tried to call a vet to do a necropsy but they are closed today so we buried Hazel. I just do not know what I am doing wrong. Oh, they are not vaccinated.
Can anyone please tell me why they are dying. These are my first batch of chickens and it is heartbreaking for me. I would appreciate any help or advice.

So sorry. This happens to all keepers. Hence the saying you either have a live chicken or dead chicken. I had one run out of her coop and collapse and die. I eventually got used to it. Just give them regular feed, and I put ACV in their drinking water and vitamins and clean out their coop every week. If you notice they are not themselves an avarian vet can prescribe antibiotics. Dust them and their coop with mite powder.
Make sure their coop is not damp. Enjoy them.

Thank you for your reply and the kind words. I found one vet that I believe sees chickens but they were closed today.
It is tough, I love these little creatures. It was rough having her die in my arms.
The coop itself is not damp the run has a couple of spots that are damp. I live in Oregon so we have lots of rain.
I had no idea that chickens can or would die so easily. People told me " Oh, chickens are easy"
