I had two chickens, both 8 months old, die within hours. One about 6 weeks ago and one today. Hazel who passed away a few hours ago was lethargic on the roosts, took her in, she took one bite of eggs and blueberry and a couple sip of water, and I gave her some vitamins. I felt little grit in her crop but she pooped during the night. I thought it was sour crop, gave her water with syringe, massaged her crop, tried to make her throw up but nothing. I noticed her eyes are closing more and more. I took her inside, wrapped her in a blanket, and was just holding her and then she just passed away.
Pebble was a similar situation, she passed away 6 weeks ago, thought she was a bit lethargic, gave her vitamins, she ate her eggs with blueberries and chicken mash, she was find put her back in the run, when I got a call from my husband that she passed away. There are no signs of injuries, no nasal discharge, no lice, no mites, no egg bound, no water belly, no neurological issues both were able to walk. The only thing that their poop was a bit runny, lethargic, comb and waddle a bit pale and that's about it.
I dewormed all of them about a month ago because I found tapeworms but since then no signs of any worms.
I feed Nutrena All Flock feed and Scratch and Peck Layer Mash in two separate feeders. I got a third feeder with Mash feed in the coop. I only had 11 Chickens so plenty of feeders. I give fresh water every morning, and clean out the roosting shelf every morning. I do put in Iron Horse Poultry Egg Enhancer in their feed for several month now. I do put occasionally Nutritional Yeas in the feed.
One thing that they had in common beside sudden death, was that I let them out of the run to enjoy the larger fenced back yard. We do have lots of wild birds especially little Finches.
I tried to call a vet to do a necropsy but they are closed today so we buried Hazel. I just do not know what I am doing wrong. Oh, they are not vaccinated.
Can anyone please tell me why they are dying. These are my first batch of chickens and it is heartbreaking for me. I would appreciate any help or advice.
