Hi

over the last few months my chickens have been getting worse at eating eggs. They constantly have grit and food available to them. We have tried giving them scrambled eggs every so often. We have golf balls in our nesting boxes to act as fake eggs. We've also tried filling an egg with mustard a couple of times, which did seem to have an effect for a couple of days. We always remove eggs as often as possible (usually twice a day). Is there anything else we can do? Any help and advice appreciated

thanks

Darken the front of your nesting boxes "some" not completely. Make sure the bottoms of the nest are soften some(I use soft hay) so there is less chance of a egg breaking. Try to remove the eggs more often if you can for a while. If all else fails they do make or even you can make roll out nesting boxes. I never seen my chickens scramble any eggs so I do not give them to them---LOL---That's like telling the chicken you can eat these eggs but not these eggs. I know, I know a lot of people do feed scrambled eggs to theirs without a problem I am sure----I don't is all I am saying!

thanks that is very true on the scrambled eggs....

i will try the darken the fronts of the nesting boxes. we are building a new coop in the summer which will have roll away nesting boxes. we use a soft bedding in the nesting boxes currently.

we have had eaten eggs again this morning!

completely out of ideas!! i love my eggs but i'm getting hardly any :( as they are munching the rest!

thanks for your help

You can darken the nesting boxes by attaching a cloth across the front---but not completely all the way. If the nesting boxes are side by side---you can hang/staple this cloth from almost the center of one to almost the center of the one beside it, ship a little space and do the same on the next. I would hang these cloths where they are not touching the bottom of the front but close. When the hen start to go into the nest her body darkens the inside the nest so they can not see the eggs---she will usually turn around in it and stick her head back out the hole a little as she lays. Good Luck----still collect the eggs several times a day if you can-----OH always flip the piece of cloth up and Look before reaching in to get the eggs----then Snakes feels Funny if you grab one of them---LOL.
