Caught this little guy in the live trap baited with marshmallows last night :) will be relocating him to a state park 10 miles away or so... Husband says he can't shoot an animal in a trap.

Took some pics of my 6&7 week old chicks this morning as well. I have. Feeling I have one cockerel and two pullets, but would appreciate any advice you have too:)

Cute chicks, love the frizzle, but i won't guess can't see them that good.

We have a young possum that visits every night gives my dogs a fit. I think it likes to irritate the dogs, we just leave it alone since everyone is locked up tighter than a drum.

That darker one sure looks male to me.

I'm not as sure about the barred one or the toilet brush. Could go either way though I lean toward female for the barred.

I don't shoot animals in a trap either. I drown them. That's safer to me and everyone and everything around, which is my top priority.

I don't know how legal releasing it in a state park is in West Virginia or how much of a concern that is to you. Releasing it ten miles from you should be enough to keep that possum from bothering you again. But other than snakes I just don't believe in relocating animals that I've trapped. If it is something I don't mind being around, I let it go. If I don't want it around, I don't give someone else a problem with a trapwise animal.

But that is your business. Do as you will.

That ain't a chicken it's a daggon feather duster or a shoe brush or a protien snack for my Cornish, but it ain't a chicken LOL.

I also like to drown them in the cage, as RR said it's easier seeing as I have a small pond 30' from my coop and where I set my traps.

I am new to raising chickens, eventhough I have fond memories of my father's uncle & aunt having chickens. I got my first 6 a week ago, 4 RIR/Blk Copper Maran cross-breeds and 2 unknown heritage. Of course, when I found the chicks that I wanted, I jumped and made the "sinful rookie mistake", I got the chicks then started working on my coop. It has been an adventure finding scrap and recyclable stuff to build the coop and waiting to discover how many roosters that I will have.

Just wanted to thank everyone on this thread, because I plan on my chickens being dual use and they will never be dressing up. This thread has all of the information that i need from OT's & newbies without the drama and extraneous stuff. I was looking for successful experience and raw proven knowledge (with some great humor) and all of you are providing it.

Thanks again and keep shooting straight from the hip.

To I read this post this morning what is wrong with this chciken?

I have no idea! I'm not well versed on poultry diseases because I never had them, so to me she just looks like an immediate cull. I'm thinking if you had Mareks before and she was the only survivor that maybe that's catching up to her now....my best advice? Kill her...she's in misery.

At first glance? Shoot that first one~you may find it picking on the other chickens...the group? not sure, others are boy, dust mop, girl. Al beat me to it...that weird looking creature simply is not identifiable as anything close to being a chicken so sexing is out of the question.

I knew you'd pick on my Frizzle, Al! In her defense, let me just say that she lays 6 eggs a week (be they little Banty eggs), and she's been one helluva broody and mother, fighting off my other LF hens with her superior ninja moves!

Thanks for the advice, all. I wouldn't mind him around so much if it weren't for my horses. There's a disease carried by opossums that horses can contract the affects their neurological system. I like my horses sane (well, as sane as anything weighing 2,000 lbs and containing its own thinking brain can be -- especially when that brain is hard wired for flight!).

I, too think the dark one is a cockerel. The black chick has a walnut comb so I don't know when I'll figure out what s/he is.
