No sir I mean milk the rooster, and visualy check the viability of his essence, there are clues he will give if the samples are less than optimal or are very good. I know I know it sounds wierd but it's not, it's a common practice among those who are serious and provides a very useful tool in a breeders arsenal.

Yeeeeup. Well known in thoroughbreds, prized beef, dairy, etc.

No they don't......... on the contrary, the light does not penetrate thus keeping them cooler and it doesn't absorb it either. plus they are oriented to maximize the breeze. Believe me when I say that, I have stuck my head in there during the hottest part of the worst dog day's here h3ll Oklahoma and it's cooler in there than anywhere else I could keep them. Sure sounds like Bull butter but it works and if it didn't i wouldn't put my birds in them, that simple. I have fine sand in each one and sometimes when it's real hot I hose down the sand and they just love that.

LOL your right........... but not as messy and alot easier LOL. The thing is, once these samples are evaluated and you decide their are not up to snuff, there are things you can do to improve it. Just part of a good breeding maintenance.

So I guess it is like the Arabs that wear black in the desert to stay cool. It does seem counter intuitive since dark colors are supposed to absorb heat.

I haven't been able to find a source either, I got a few hundred from a friend of mine years ago. I wash and reuse them as needed. Perhaps you could try some of the more obscure real Gamebird sites, this concept was originaly concieved by the game cock guy's. mainly because of the many varieties they hatch at one time in the same bator.
Try citrus producers.

How do you clean them? If you were conditioning for a show and using sand I would not think you would want the poop to build up. I know you are tall, I am all of 5'3" and can't imagine being able to get into those easily especially if you had a bird/birds in there. Put them in a holding pen while you scoop the poop?? Kitty litter scoop with a really long handle???

They are actual very easy to clean reaching in is also not a prolem, the barrels have drian holes in the for total cleaning. Mostly I just put the bird into another barrel then scoop out the old sand and put in new stuff. the old sand gets put into a pile and cleaned, then it gets replaced as needed. The birds stay really clean in these, and I have alot of white birds.
