Well I would say every year but last year I got a tomato blight so I only did half that. I use the juice and salsa in my chili and veggie soups and pasta sauce, pizza sauce, ketchup in other recipes. I then use some of my sauces to can italian and sweet frankies peppers too. I actually am running low this year already. I have 8 people (four growing boys and my DH plus his parents) at home to feed plus I give some away to extended family.

100 quarts for how many people? Hey, at least you got it all done and reaped your benefits for a long time

I cook a lot and seem to use tomato products in a lot of my cooking and we aren't even Italian

I wish I could master black beans because I use a lot of them too.

OH I have a pic of my raised carrot bed, its not the best pic but give a general idea. The carrots were overflowing in it.

r4eboxer,, we have only 4 adults.. and my youngest daughter snags a jar every once in awhile.. this year I did make a small batch of catsup.. 2 qts.. I made all of mine into juice.. I use it mainly to make chili.. I do not like chunks of tomato in my chili..

one year I just mounde up four 3 ft x 4 ft beds in the garden and planted carrots on all of them,, we had tons of carrots.. well, maybe not tons, but way more than we needed.. I broadcasted the seeds like grass.. My wife told me to never do that again.. the beds were too difficult to weed.. Once the tops got a little taller, there were no weeds..

If we are lucky, we'll start in 4 months here... LOL We've had snow on the 4th of July before.. anyone who plants anything that will freeze before Memorial day will be replanting in June 9 out of 10 years... We are hoping to build a hoop house in the next year or two to extend our growing season..

On the bright side.. we have no cockroaches, huge spiders and lots of other bugs here so it's a fair trade... sorta....

I am now 60+ years young and chickens have been on this farm longer than I have. Mom an Dad always had a small flock(10-20) for eggs, meat and live market for excess roosters. When I was a kid I had always had a pet chicken or duck that was my favorite play pal.I now keep almost free range chickens,(lock them up at night),for home use eggs and love to see what color baby chicks I can hatch. I have a mixed flock of Americanas,Reds,Black-Blue Silkies, a couple pekin ducks,a couple brown kackie ducks an one white goose.

I'd like some of the OTs to give their thoughts on mouse and other rodent control in a coop/run. I know that feed should be stored in secure containers, feeders off the ground or filled only at feeding time, etc.........
What are your thoughts Uncle Clem, Fred, Al, NYREDS, and all the other Old Time chicken keepers out there...
