Thank you to the last few posters, laughter is the best medicine!

I take plastic grocery bags to the feed store & they left me pick the alfalfa scraps off the ground for free. I get enough to fill my 5 gal bucket, and every day I throw a handful out to the chickens. My friend do comment on how orange my yolks are.

Dumb question now....... How do I stop my EE from knocking the egg she just laid off the shelf & cracking it, this is the 3rd egg this week, she has done this to? She is a mid day layer & they are out free ranging at that time. I can't lock her up, because that will piss off the other hens who want to go in and lay. Am going to try to find some type of padding to put down on the deck, or even build a single nest box to put there & see if she will use it. Some of the Buffs are still using the overturned trash can as a nesting box. Had 5 in the nesting box today, one in the trash can & the knocked off one on the deck. I save the cracked ones, hard boil them & feed them back to the girls.

We have always used alfalfa as a substitute for the greens we do not have in our pens and free range acreage due to Arizona's dry climate in the deserts. There is very little in the way of green leafy plants here most of the year except short periods after heavy rains...

Never have tried anything but the real deal in bales and throw some in the pens before they are let out for the day.

Too bad this thread's idea could not spur the powers that be at BYC to start an "old Timers Advise" section as many questions are not being addressed due to the deepening muck of a loooooooong thread.

OT's 2 questions that have been asked but not answered yet.... well really one, but I had one too.

Feeling up a chicken's vent for eggs- Can you actually feel an egg. I don't need gloves, I have a hose and or the sink and soap?

I googled 5 pages.... I know.... WOW! What is Boss?

Thanks,

Shawn

Boss will help with several things.................... Keeps the birds busy scratching around, BOSS has allot of natural oils benificial to chickens. It helps their skin and promotes great feather regrowth after a molt and will help with plumage all year round. Protien content is good, the birds love it, and it's a much better little addition to anybody feed suppliment. In short BOSS is king.

Is there any difference between BOSS and the striped sunflower seeds? (Oil content or something?)

The hulls of the seeds do contain some oil's but most of the good stuff comes from the meat of the seed. Hulled BOSS or just plain sunflower seed will more than likely be quite expensive.
