bee i am sorry . yes you are right and have told mentioned this more than once about chickens being egg eaters it is interesting how nature works. yep if there is something not right about the offspring. it is killed. makes sense bad egg chicken eats it.

funny you can have all the knowledge in the world. however when you do it for yourself by yourself it has a whole new meaning. the men at those city markets are now gone. the people who i have done chickens with are gone. now it is me by myself calling the shots.

No need to apologize, Bruce...

It's just a seasonal topic that rolls around twice a year. Ever notice there aren't many roosters that get named as egg-eaters? Coincidence? I think not....

I guess I always grew up with the knowing of this phenomenon and never gave egg eating a second's thought...until I came to BYC and read all the posts about how to cure an egg-eater. I couldn't believe it! And every year like clockwork the same people with the same issue and they never seem to catch on and they give the same advice each time.

Granny would get a hoot out of it all!

I always look at those poor folks who win the lottery and see what they choose to do with money, shake my head and say, "What rednecks do when they get money.....".
roll.png
What would I do with all that money? I'd give it away...I'm too darn good at being poor to stop now. Being rich would ruin my life!
i once had money a lot of it dang near a millionaire . i had all the toys , rolex watches. cars the whole 9 yards. no that i have no money and all the toys are gone. i don't miss the money at all. i like being humble i like to have the real people in my life. i like the adrenaline of making ends meet. i love the simple life. the best part of not having money is i have not been in trouble once.

So True and I never did find out why, should eat something I hated, because kids in China were starving? How did it help them? Mama Fed the 10 of us on 1#of dried beans, 2#of rice and 60 cents of pickled pork and that was 4 to 5 days out of 7. It was a real treat to get chicken or an occasional piece of beef ! Those are called the "good old days" but not for the food !

Dude, are you okay? Why dont you just go ahead and get the mustard out. Itll be fun to fill up the Easter eggs with mustard and then watch for a couple hours to see what the chickens do.
Heck, put some calf manna in the nests and they wont eat another egg again! Then you can get some pics of the lash maybe. Play some ACDC for them. Take out the baby wipes and wash the dust off their feathers. Okay, well dont do that- but you are not alone. This great big internet has given you friends all over the Country. Just because we arent sittin on your road honkin doesnt mean we arent here if you need anything. Dont run afowl on us.

i smell my food too dragonlady. i also smell the food for the chicken and the dogs, i even gone as far as tasting the birds food.

so the problem i have is i got an egg eater. caught her red beaked.

bee the issue i had with the birds passed they are now laying great. must have been the food change. out of 17 layers got 14 today. thats including the 2 the red hen ate.

i have no idea how to stop the egg eater.

i only know 1 way stew pot.

Everytime I feed my animals I smell and visually inspect their food also. I USED to taste whatever I was making them. I stopped when I was making BML for my sugar glider. The ingredients are innocent enough, baby rice formula, honey, egg, a couple of jars of chicken in gravy (baby food) Calcium and Multi Vitamins etc. After I had everything mixed I would taste it... Everytime I made it.
One day I thought I was doing a great thing by Adding MealWorms to the formula... Extra protein... A GOOD THING... and you guessed it, Out of habit I dipped my finger in the cubes and Tasted the mix

I can laugh about it now... But when It happened Not only did I feel stupid after running to the bathroom to upchuck, But as I was brushing My teeth I came to the conclusion that changing a good ritual was bad for your health

My sister and I were confirmed, dyed in the wool bean haters from the get go. Well, in a poor family of nine children, beans are what's fer supper more often than not. You know what we were told? "Take it or leave it!"...but we were never really given the option to actually "leave it".

We were forced to sit at that table, in front of beans that had long ago turned cold and mealy, and were to sit there until we finished them. If I gagged when trying to choke them down, I was told, "If you puke, you will eat that too."

I ate the beans. Still hate them to this day but I sure 'nuff ate them then.

And that is part of what made you who you are, Bee!!

Somehow you turned out wonderfully and you've got a good relationship with your mom by the sounds of things.

I just went out about 30 min ago to check on the chickens before their mad dash to the coop when it gets dark and they don't wanna be in the yard anymore, and a few of my chickens were sneezing, some of them were loud, and some of them were soft, but I was stumped as to why, could anyone help me out on this? what should i do? is it a problem? thanks, I would post this in the emergencies section, but i have posted there twice, and the first time, nobody replied, and the 2nd time, 1 person replied with an unhelpful answer.
A good part of the reason no one is being that helpful is because it could be so many different things, few of them good. Many old timers simply cull sick birds. If they are starting to sneeze and nothing else has changed, they're likely sick. Is there nasal discharge? Eyes goopy? There's two approaches for this:

One is to separate the sneezing ones for treatment. Problem is how to treat. You can try getting some duramycin from the feed store and treating them. But without knowing what it is, that may or may not help. And we can't diagnose over the internet with accuracy. The only truly accurate way to know for sure is to send a dead one off for necropsy. Before that, it's a lot of guesswork since many chicken illnesses have the same symptoms.

The other is not to separate them since the whole flock is exposed anyway and let nature run it's course. This is what I'd do. Just wait. Check the droppings of the sneezers. What's the color, etc? Take a look here: http://chat.allotment.org.uk/index.php?topic=17568.0 Only after you have a better idea what exactly is wrong can you really decide what to do.

I'm not an OT as far as chickens but the likely reason the real OT's are saying much is that they would probably just cull sick birds and not treat them. They would know their birds, and know that their methods were tried and true. They would know their birds were the most hardy and that any getting sick are the weak ones whose genetics they don't need. Or, well, there's just so much else at work here.

PS - here's some disease info that will help you maybe. Probably scare the poo out of you, too: http://www.clemson.edu/public/lph/ahp/disease_links/images/poultrydiseases.pdf
