Fred, THANK YOU for the quiz! And for not throwing me out of class for turning in my homework late.

I learned a lot. Someday I might also learn to follow directions.

My husband has a horse. Well, he had a horse, but I was the only one who rode the dumb blonde jerk, so I sold him. Now my husband doesn't have a horse! Haven't had to cull my flock yet, but I can cull a herd

Whew. For a minute I thought the dumb blonde jerk was your husband...

And thank you, Al, for the comic relief!

The list of Gold Standard Dual Purpose is too long. There are a dozen, easily that MUST be considered. If I were a purchasing agent for you or a hired consultant, I'd sit down with for a lengthy interview, I'd survey your temperament, style, objectives and facilities. I am personally a Rock, Red, NH, type guy. But, that tells you nothing unless that is explained. Maybe by Tuesday, we'll get into this and why? Fair enough?

More than fair! Thank you!

Good Morning everyone.

Got to thinking about the learning thing, I think if the next possible conversation were to move toward what are popularly known as "Dual Purpose" birds, we may want to take one breed at a time. Really dig into one particular breed, say the Rocks, for a day or two, before moving on to another breed. This might prove less "bouncing" and more focused? Perhaps starting with the ever popular Americans? Might want to even look up what "the Americans" means in the chicken world.

Just an early morning, first cup of coffee thought?

Well Pete, being on the opposite side of the world, you're a half a day ahead of us here in North America. G' Day Mate. Hope I said that reasonably right.

Taking the more popular breeds, one at a time.

When talking about proper body shape, tail, back, neck, leg color, feathering, combs, heads, etc, etc, seems to me we'd be forced to take one breed at a time, otherwise we'd be talking apples to oranges to bananas and past each other all the time. Each breed has a unique history, a purpose for which it was originally created, a beauty in the mind's eye of the original creator(s) and an affection in the hearts of those who keep them and breed them today. Just sayin'.

i had barred rocks for awhile. they were good dual purpose chickens; good layers, good meat. every barred rock rooster that i ever had was mean though and that ruined them as a breed for me. mine didn't really have that clean barring like the show/heritage ones.
