40 + years here and I know nothin'




The older I get, the less I know.

I've owned chickens for 8 years and I still feel like I don't know much... 40 years is much longer then 8 years, but I know what you're talking about. We can never know everything about chickens even if we studied them all of our lives.

It kind of depends what you did and how many you raised in 8 years..the number of years is only part of the equation. I know some really old poultry folks and they don't know it all either. We do have about 100,000 poultry know it all's in the other threads here though.

I personally know 1 few of those types in my area. The funniest thing is, most often they are wrong or completely clueless. One of those types gave me 6 mature RIR's because he thought they stopped laying. The molt they were going through ended and I have more really good laying hens. 1 is actually broody right now. This is the same guy who told me he was getting 12 eggs a day, every day, from 12 RIR's. And he claimed some of his girls layed 2 eggs a day. This guy has had chickens for 30 years.
Like anything else, you figure out who knows what they are talking about and who doesn't.

Whether they know what they are talking about or not, some folks just like to stretch the truth a bit. Full of that stuff you find on the ground in the bull pen.

Question re: night gard lights for preditors.
Do they work or is it just one of those things they sell to make money on trusting people? Are any OTs using?

They seem to work most of the time for most predators, but they didn't bother a red fox I just caught in a live trap. The only thing I really trust is an electric fence.

Best Predator control is my Blue cattle that has rid me of rats cats, foxes, possums and a large eagle that was tempted (In Australia thats about it for pests)

So he does well....Then herds them into the coop if they stray too long at dusk.

Walt...what size live trap do you need for a fox? I have one that is large enough for raccoons (and I've caught 4 so far this spring) but I think I'd need a larger one for a fox or coyote.

Whew! I finally read the whole thing! Good for me...I agree quality vrs quantity, but having a large flock would certainly bring up alot more issues and experiences. I am glad to know there is a place to get info for real, and not have to deal with over the top touchy feely junk page after page...makes me weary. Those people have their own threads and hope they stick there and leave some diversity at the other side of the fence.
I am interested in the book beekissed is writing, I hope this will be available to download on line, but will get it either way.
