I only have eight large layers, so the loss of one of those will make me have to adjust my recipes!
seriously, the loss of even one is a kick in the gut, but freeranging them is what chickens do and i think they are healthy and happy doing it and there's less poop for me to contend with...I don't worry about them getting enough nutrition and i enjoy watching the young pullets jumping to get the tall grass seeds-great exercise for them. Shoot. Alot of folk round here don't even have coops, the birds roost in the trees. Now, if Moe went down over the hill into the poison ivy area where I can cut a line of sight around her nesting area, I may just finally get that cat...I have a 180 view from here...I wanted to make sure she has a full clutch of eggs again too.
