I only have eight large layers, so the loss of one of those will make me have to adjust my recipes! :) seriously, the loss of even one is a kick in the gut, but freeranging them is what chickens do and i think they are healthy and happy doing it and there's less poop for me to contend with...I don't worry about them getting enough nutrition and i enjoy watching the young pullets jumping to get the tall grass seeds-great exercise for them. Shoot. Alot of folk round here don't even have coops, the birds roost in the trees. Now, if Moe went down over the hill into the poison ivy area where I can cut a line of sight around her nesting area, I may just finally get that cat...I have a 180 view from here...I wanted to make sure she has a full clutch of eggs again too.

Check out the thread on fermenting feed. I am fermenting all my scratch, cracked corn, wneat and barley, it is working for me on a small scale, the layers are doing flips to get it...basically it 'predigests' the grains and offers more nutrients and probiotics without breaking the bank and tossing money at the specialty stores...I only buy from the feed stores. The really nice thing is the feed is moist and plump grains, no choking, no dust. Look in feeding meaties thread.
Would you be willing to post a link to the thread that you like on fermenting? Bee also has info on fermenting in THIS THREAD but I'd like to read through the one you reference.

Thanks!

So, here's a story a little off topic. The grandkids visited and i inoculated them very well this trip...afternoon snack of oaty o's. The six year old says....oh, I forgot to wash my hands...well let me see....mostly just clay dirt...me oh that's not too bad, you'll be fine, just use the tips of your fingers. Hey if they are going to move here....besides, we just had a drought and i can't waste water on silly things like washing hands all the time. Am I bad?

Kids need dirt as much as baby chicks do!

everybody was a newbie at one time or another, and no one ever got anywhere by themselves, and nobody knows it all...one of the best things in life is helping someone that needs it. (I'm a timer, not old--i can still do a cartwheel):)
