Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I know they are saught after because they are unusual, but I think I could actually kill that one myself. Bless its heart! It looks like it ran through the ugly forest and smacked right into every single tree!

i never raised any necked necks or turkens. i know they do cold weather ok. they do lay a brown egg. how great i don't know. if i remember right they come from transylvania . people use them as a meat bird.. bantams to small for meat for me. they are supposed to be friendly..

@therapy dog Brie what is your goals . think about it and tell us.

My naked necks are excellent layers and lay huge eggs, both brown and green (have NN/EE crosses). Plus they do well in the heat AND the cold (I'm in upstate NY). Have had a few go broody also and so far they've done a good job.

(my hubby and one of our NN pullets)

I think I DO remember reading that the naked necks are from Transylvania...Hmmm. Maybe The Count had something to do with the development of this breed...( OH! Chickenfeathers! LOL)

Breeders , especially Dr. Edgar Petty of OKC, worked hard to develop the Standard colors in the Naked Neck. The Black Tail Red has Rhode Island red bloodlines. The Buff has Buff Plymouth Rock etc. Depending on the strain, most are good layers. With any bantams, they are for show and novelty. The large fowl is a dual purpose bird. Years ago i did have a few Buff Naked Neck, but went back to the Orpingtons. I always go back to the Orpingtons!

A Naked Neck can and has won best of show. If it is the closest to its Standard a judge can ignore its ugliness and place it as a Champion. At Crossroads, with 10,276 entries, an ugly Black Muscovy drake won Best of Show. It was not the prettiest bird in the show, it just met its own Standard better than the other 10,275 birds. Or so a team of judges felt so.

Find the breed you like and enjoy it. No matter if its an ugly duck, a Naked Neck or a beautiful Buff Orpington!

FYI: We also raise the beautiful Chocolate Muscovy Duck!

Bruceh: Goals? Well, we wanted to slow our hectic lives down and raise our own kids instead of them going to daycare or babysitters after school every day while we continued to toil away at never-ending jobs.

We want to instill a sense of responsibility to themselves, their family, their community, and feel that a family project helps us do that. We decided on raising and showing chickens. Each child has chosen a breed (or two) of chicken that they like, and we have helped them read all about them and discussed the pros and cons with them, and let them choose. Samantha, of course, is going strictly by looks and color (Mille Fleur d'Uccles and Golden Seabrites - bantams). She's 6, so the bantam size is good for her. BJ, though, is striving to get his grandmother's Dominiques back and continue with her heritage breed. He was so serious about this, that we contacted the man in Texarkanna who took her hens, and he has agreed to sell them back to us as well as a good, show quality rooster. We will meet halfway weekend after next. BJ will represent the 5th generation for these chickens!

Bryan and I showed rabbits before the kids came, and we enjoyed it very much. But I refused to have even a dog in the city. I just think they need at least as much attention as your kids, and when the kids came, there was no time left to dedicate to a pet. And so, we have moved to Kermit, with all this space, and will try to produce a garden, sell a few eggs, pick up the goat milk business again (Bryan grew up with milk goats, so it's old hat to him.), and try to make our lives efficient and purposeful. Our family activities will be the chickens, and we feel that showing them will help unify our family, instill responsibility in our kids, as well as being just downright FUN!

I am thrilled that BJ is getting his gramma's Dominiques back! Oh, she must be dancing in heaven! Your goals sound wonderful. As for breeds other than that, just get what you like.
