got a question ? would you eat a bird that has been hen pecked with a sore? i am doing my slaughter in the am like 4 in the morning. i just did another once over for health check.
i came across this pullet with a sore under her wing. not a small one. the skin is pink with some scabing.. i seperated her in a pen. know the question is do i slaughter her for my consumption or dog food. i am not willing to hold this one over good weight 71/2 lbs.

never had this problem so close to slaughter.

my guess is dog food.
Personally, I'd feed it to the dog. It's probably OK if there are no signs of infection, but I just don't like the idea of eating a bird with an open sore. Or one that has been sick. It's the eww factor for me.

Just a wound from another bird pecking it? Eat it. If there is no active infection or pus under that scab, should be okay.

Thank you for sharing. I am planning to add trellis -- and maybe grow hops? -- on the sides of my run. I do need to consider how to put a snow-proof roof on it; I don't have inexpensive metal roofing readily available to me, but I'll keep my eyes peeled.
Hops would completely cover both your sleeping coop and run. See my page for photos. I planted 2 hops vines on the west side of my 10' tall x 20' wide covered run in Feb. last year. Really baby vines. They have now completely covered the end, run around the sides, and gone up over the roof. That I trim. Your birds would be living in complete darkness during the summer unless you replace the lasttice with hardware cloth.. The vines DO die to the ground in the winter, which is why I used them is S.C. Someone came the other day, and asked why I'd planted Kudzu!!

People must have a lot more room in thier bra's then I do.

I had that same thought!! Saw the title, looked down, left, right.....maybe a little room in the middle?

"They" say most women wear incorrectly fitting bras.............maybe that's where the extra space comes in? Personally, I always wondered how "they" knew that..........

I have a question for people who have had chickens for a long time...
if I am free-ranging my chickens, how much property would you say I'd need for 15 chickens (in acreage.)

It sounds more like a wound than an infection to me Bruce. I'd dress it last and as long as the meat looked ok....

Yup, I'd eat it in a heartbeat.

Depends on what's on that acerage. You could probably get away with a quarter acre if it was full of stuff for them to hang out in. My 6 till up to 30ish birds ranged only the edge of the woods and the clear area around the house which is maybe an acre or so. I'd imagine if I had 5 acres of field, they'd still just hang around where there is more shelter and under trees. They don't go far from home.

thank you all for the go ahead. does not look infected or smell bad. just looks raw and pink. i will let you all know tomorrow. if worst comes to worse i will cut that part out and toss it.

thank you,
bruce
