Quote: And the same holds true for fruit and vegetables... the stuff in grocery stores is developed and grown so that it looks good, looks uniform, and can survive shipping, handling, storage, and packaging with minimal damage.
Taste needs to be consistent and uniform, so exceptional is bred out.

I think the original statement would be more accurate if it said this:

"breeding only for standard and looks is the ruination of most all types of animals."

Actually no taste.

pretty on the outside no taste on the inside.

Side note: I don't advocate the shooting of migratory birds as a method of predator control. It's an illegal practice in most places and there are ways to protect the flocks from this threat that doesn't include blasting all the hawks and owls from the sky on sight. Even if I did, I would not discuss this on a public forum. As others have pointed out, it's just not a good idea....

I agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yep, I have a darling looking Golden who takes hormones every day to prove that. On a different note, what do turkey eggs look like?

As for breeding for something I thought with chickens you start with egg production, meatiness, weather tolerances and then brought it home with looks. Surely no one is just working on getting a cute chicken?

Yeah, I amended it the same way.

Silkies??

Silkies? Oh really? Thats terrible. There is no purpose to their appearance?
I think the two huge eggs that I thought my leghorn laid are actually turkey eggs.
They look like this pic I found online. And were both laid on the ground or on the coop floor. Large, spotted and very pear shaped.

Very pretty eggs.

I added the "only" because I really want to avoid the argument about mutt chickens being superior in this thread. There's other places for that one.
