Hey Bruce, Don't you think these white girls would be best going White Rock or just take them back to Red? The body type looks GREAT in either color, but the White Rock would certainly be a natural way to go.

white i like white. you also can do a lot of avenues with white. you can breed to sex link, table bird,or egg layer. just my 2 cents.

On some breeds, the head shape calls for a pea comb. On other head shapes, the head of a rock absolutely calls for a single comb and a rose comb would look ridiculous. Just sayin'. The Wyandottes, Chanteclar and Buckeyes all look fabulous. Truth is, I've always been a single comb guy. Don't know why even.

That said, an over sized, exaggerated comb is a fault. I honestly breed for shorter, single combs. That looks the best to me. To each his own.

The whole "frost bite comb phobia" is for others threads here. Lots of them of them to dive right into.

True O.T.'ers don't pay much mind to the issue. It seems to be one of the major concerns of folks who have those itty, bitty, teeny, tiny coops in the city. Apparently, from what I can tell, frost bite seems to target urban chickens to much larger degree than birds raised out in the country.
if it gets too wet and cold, throw a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the comb.

ok if we are in this subject of roosters and hens. i found a very educational pic of a rooster being a gentleman to impress the ladies . in his other wing he has some recordings of lou rawis and barry white

The great thing is this. Their grandmothers, ISAs, entering POL at 16-17 weeks. These pullets are 22 weeks. That's great new for our program. Very pleased to have pushed it back. Here are the three, this photo was at the 16-17 week mark. You can see, they were not ready. They are maturing more slowly. The utility BR also laid today. It is a hatch mate thing, I guess. Very happy.

spent some time with the birds today. nothing better than looking. today's subject chicken butts 1 got 1 that i really like so far.

the chicks in the brooder.

my guess they are still very young 3 1/2 weeks .

marans breed- black copper variety total of 4

1 rooster ( taller, wider more colorful than the others .comb is more pronounced set back farther )

2. females ( short stature combs less pronounced, wider plumper bodies not as colorful)

1. can't tell ( tall, thinner, not so colorful, comb is set back but not pronounced )

of the 4 birds so far 2 show nice feathering on the legs (. the cockerel and 1 of the pullet chicks) wing feathers on the ones that i think are females are coming in nicely.

welsummer 3 total

3 females almost fully feathered combs are out all look great.

so we will see who is what in a couple weeks.

probably the wrong thread for this. the point is to spend time with the birds and get to know them.
