my GSD has killed two of my chickens. It’s been in a 2 year time frame but that’s just because I am VERY cautious. He was out back today bc it’s 70 here in NY and I wanted him to be able to lay on the deck in the sun. Well it turned crummy and windy. I was taking a nap in my room when I heard the sounds of my chickens clucking right outside my window. I jumped up so fast yelling “chief” (dogs name) and ran outside to find him coming in and going right to his crate. The other 2 times he killed one and then went to chase another one. So this is weird. I can’t find the chicken that’s missing. I can’t find any evidence of her being killed. I have a 6ft privacy fence so I looked all around that. If he had time out there and killed her and ate her I would see evidence right? No way he’d eat every feather. I’m praying. And if he didn’t kill her and she comes back I’ll be so proud of that dog for not killing. Would a cat have got her? That’s what I’m scared of now. She flew the fence and then this black cat that’s been around lately killed her

Sorry.

The best thing to do is go back out and keep looking for her.
You may find her hiding some where.

Good luck.

She came back! I used my “chicken voice” calling her name about every 20 minutes. She’s known as Dixie but when I call for her I go “Dixie girl” anyways I did my final call before headed to work and she called back and I found her!! So happy :) thanks for the good luck wishes!!

Great!!!
Now be extra extra careful with the dog.
You are very lucky...you may not be next time.
Congrats.

I know how lucky I am. I’ve lost two girls to him over a two year stretch. The wind is never an issue with my coop door and has never been busted open by weather in those two years so that was something I couldn’t have predicted. It now has another padlock to make sure it will never happen again. In the fall I actually had started working with him around the chickens on a leash. He’s super smart and loves loves loves praise. so I think some of that training also benefited us in this situation. I will never ever let him off the leash around them and definitely never unsupervised.
