Lots of breeds are good backyard layers, my caution would be to be very careful whenever introducing new birds to a flock of reds. "Rhode Island Reds" (truthfully, Production Reds) are notorious for being very picky and aggressive with other breeds. Go slow during introduction and preferably don't introduce fewer than 3-4 birds. Don't add any breed smaller than they are. Other than that there are lots of good common breeds: Sex Links, Barred Rocks, Orpingtons, Australorps, Delawares, Easter Eggers, Wyandottes, Sussex, Marans, and lots more.
