Chickens have red bottoms and no feathers!!!!!!!

One of my chickens has this problem too so I will be checking for mites asap. I'm thinking the local wild birds may be spreading them.

I have a hen that has the same problem. She is still laying so that isn't her problem. But does anyone have a suggestion.

I have about 5 red bottom chickens, they all eat well. I only have 4 chickens out of 10 laying eggs. I have checked for stuck eggs and can't find any. They all have red combs. I clean my coop every week and put down the diatomaceous-earth with the clean bedding. I'm using pine chips in my coop. I'm ready to butcher.

It would help if you could start a new thread of your own since this one is old. Is it winter or summer where you live? Are they pecking each other’s vents or feather? Have you checked their skin for lice or mites? Could they be eating eggs? How old are they? What do you feed them? If it is winter, many hens stop laying due to the decreased daylight hours. Some may be getting ready to start laying again as the daylight hours increase. Pictures of vents may help.

It could be mites, but I'll bet it's feather picking by other birds. I had several bright, flaming, red butts in my birds due to that particular problem. Whenever chicken skin is exposed to the elements it turns bright red whether it is on their butts or elsewhere. The location is indicative of feather picking, though. Butts and lower backs are target areas. You should take some time to watch your flock. I did that, and within an hour I had pinpointed a culprit who was walking up behind birds and just yanking out butt feathers by the mouthful. I'm guessing you have the same thing going on.

Good luck.
What did you do to stop this from happening?
