I have a mixed flock of 34 hens. This summer has been a terrible one for egg production; young hens molted in May (hatched April of 19), and I thought the reduced egg laying was due to our extra hot year and too many broodies. I've been getting around 18 eggs daily, rather than a couple dozen. Recently, though, I'm getting anywhere from 1 to 5 eggs a day! I first noticed my marans haven't laid for about 2 months, simply because of the egg color. Now it's all the hens for the past week. My hens are free ranging on our ranch all day and I've looked for egg stashes out in the trees. Today I kept them in the run, and got 3 eggs so I'm fairly sure it's not that. I spray the coop often with permethrin to prevent mites and I've looked at several hens, and no sign of mites or lice. Their feathers look fine except for a few that are molting, and combs are bright. I have healthy birds. I purchase feed from our local mill in a tote; roasted grain mixed to a layer ration. I'm thinking this last tote had to be missing something .... but what? I've got some Purina Flock Raiser to get more protein going for now, but is there something I'm missing. I've had chickens for several years now .... usually in the summer I'm begging neighbors to take eggs. This year, we don't have enough for the family! I appreciate all you input
and thanks.
