I am in love with Chickens! There, I've declared it! I just wanted to start a new post about the chicken breeds we wish we had or we have and are so proud of! This will help to prove I am not the only one who needs more chickens, then maybe my DH will not think I've lost my mind!

It seems like the more I read and the more I look, the various types of chicken breeds increases! I'm always finding new breeds or colors and thinking to myself, I HAVE to HAVE one!

Recently, the chocolate egg bug has gotten to me. I Soooo badly want a MARANS now!
Preferably Blue/Splash but to start with any would work!

In addition to colorful eggs, (already have 2 Ameraucanas) why not more lawn ornaments with more color? Like a Lavender Orpington or Ameraucana? How about a SLW, I already have GL and BLR. Or a Silver or Golden Lakenvelder?

Then I read the current BYC post about Chicky Gaga and now the idea of a Buff Laced Polish just seems so appealing! That lovely ball of fluff on top! Like a lovely Russian Hat! But why stop there! What about a Frizzle with the crazy morning hair that last all day! or a Silkie that looks like a fluffy stuffed chicken! haha no food talk meant there!

So as you can see, the chicken maddness has happened and I am a firm believer now in Chicken Math! I have recently come up with the best idea ever! Try to hatch my own!
Now if I can just talk my DH into it!

Hope this makes someones day!

I would LOVE to hear anyone elses thoughts/feelings/concerns/obsessions?

Oh god! Don't even get me started. I'm ready to move out of the city JUST to get a roo and a nice big flock for him. I would LOVE a big beautiful Cochin roo. *drool*
I understand your craving! They are all so cute and lovely. <3

Ditto! We still live in the city so I currently only have 15 chicks, but I can only imagine what is going to happen when we do move! Maybe its a good thing we havent yet! Keep some control on my addiction!

Perfect idea for a new thread!!! My hubby is so sick of hearing me go on about my chickens he just gives me that "look" now! It's nice to have a place like this to brag about chickens!
yesss.gif

I lost some chicks out of the batch I just got last month and he won't let me replace them since I've reached my chicken limit, so I'm having to resort to trickery!
barnie.gif

I want some more Mottled Houdans as I've only got one now and I was really excited about them and wanting to try to breed some. I just love the puffs of feathers on their heads! And salmon faverolles! I want a roo to go with the two pullets I've got. I think these chickens are just beautiful with their fluffy faces!
I've got 3 light brahma pullets now too and they are the sweetest little things and so cute to boot! I've also got some new rhode island red pullets which I have a special liking for just because that was the first breed of chicken I started with. And I've got 6 Anconas for the white eggs since my husband won't eat brown or green ones for some reason I still can't figure out!
hu.gif
And then some speckled sussex for the eggs and their beautiful speckled feathers!
I got a mystery chick with my order from MM and it ended up being a silver spangled hamburg which I'm so excited about! I've been wanting some of these "just because" but never end up getting them for some reason or another so I was just beside myself with that 1 little hamburg chick! I just love their polka dot look! So neat!
I've got black stars and easter eggers that are getting on in years but they've turned into pets and they're just so friendly I'll never get rid of them or eat them. I figure they've earned a good retirement!
I've got some little banty hens and rooster too and I'm loving these too! I just love seeing them poking about in the yard! My hens are sitting on a clutch of eggs right now so I'm hoping for some more of these little beauties to hatch out soon!

Some on my wish list are the buff polish, some silkies, more easter eggers, white crested black polish, cuckoo marans, more silver spangled hamburgs.....the list could go on forever I'm sure!
Thanks for listening to me go on! It was nice not to get that "look"!!! :)

I know exactly what you mean by "The LOOK"

Now I get it from both my DH and my co-workers! They all look at me like I'm crazy. Their favorite game to play with me is talking about buying KFC or Popeyes for dinner. Or they will pop their heads over the cubicle and ask me if my chickens are ready to be eaten!

The only person who has agreed with me in public that chickens are a good thing to have was the Vietnamese lady who painted my nails, but that is because she has some too. It was wonderful to relate to someone in person!

Trickery is becoming a new found art for me! haha! My DH's daughter loves them and told him that we had to get more chickies so she can name them! YES!!
I knew kids were good for something. HAHA, JK.

MM is where I purchased my first chicks from and they gave me a free Salmon Faverolle Roo. I ended up selling him already since I can not have Roo's. Would've given him to ya if I had known sooner. sorry.

Ouhhhhhhhh egggggsss!

Hopefully you get some babies!!!! Trickey Trickster!

My kids are even sick of hearing me talk about chickens!! Poor things have no choice tho! LOL! I sure would've loved to have had that roo! I live way out in the sticks so I don't have a rooster limit, although I'm down to only 1 banty rooster(unless my new hamburg is a roo). And I love to hear the crowing!! He starts at first light and goes all day. I'm sure it would drive anyone else nuts but I just love it!
love.gif

I resorted to trickery with the banty eggs too I'm afraid! I told him there were only 3 that had chicks in them to diffuse any "you don't need anymore chickens" lectures, but there's like 2 dozen eggs under them, banty size and big ones from the EE's and black stars. And my roo is VERY attentive to his ladies, so I'm sure almost all of them must be fertile. I'm hoping he won't notice an extra dozen or so little chicks hopping about!
fl.gif

I'm worried about when they hatch though because I've been trying to integrate the new chiks in with the older chickens and yesterday 2 chicks got through their enclosue into the main enclosure and the big ones almost killed them by pecking them. So now I'm wondering if they'll try that when the new ones hatch. My wonderful husband said I need to just clear out all the old ones to the freezer and be done with it. I can tell you I was not happy with that idea!! The only chickens I butcher are roosters that are too aggressive. The others are pets and NOT FOR EATING!!! But try telling that to a brick wall!
he.gif
Oh the trials of a chicken lover! LOL. Anyway I think I'm going to section off part of the coop and yard for the newbies and soon to be newbies until I figure out how to make everyone get along!
I'll make sure to take pics as soon as I notice the eggs are hatching! I've never gotten to watch an egg hatch in person! I'm just excited to have more babies coming! I just had someone ID the breed of them for me yesterday. Said they were old english game bantams but with mixed up colors or maybe EE mixed in somewhere. No purebreds then just lovely little picasso chicks! I don't think I could ever get tired of the thrill of trying to figure out what color will it be, is it a roo, is it a pullet, the first egg!, the first crow!. OMG, I'm nuts I know but I don't care!
I'm assuming you live in city limits since you can't have roos. How many hens are you allowed to keep there? Do you have a fenced yard that they run round in or did you make them a run or something? What do your neighbors think? Have you talked them into being chicken people too yet? HAHA. Ok I'm shutting up! Bye for now!

I already have three chickens. Nothing special to look at, but one gives me lovely green eggs. Waiting to hatch are some pekin bantams, and I have just set some Marans (for the lovely dark eggs) and some lovely pot luck Silkies. I am also liking the look of Polish and Frizzles.
