Chickens in a tree

Thank you all for your tips and advice. I went out today and had a "little word of prayer" with the girls--and told them that there would be no slumber parties in the tree. then I swooshed them all into the coop where they are happy to snorf around in the pine shavings and talk to each other.

I came home the other night and went out to shut the doors on one of my coops and could not find the girls anywhere....3 of them were up in a tree, I got them down, but sure enough they were up again last night. I just need to keep my fingers crossed that they'll be OK, I'm not about to drag them down each night, they scream like they are being murdered!!!

I wish I had the guts to put my chickens free range! That's what I was planning with them in a sturdy coop at night) but I keep hearing racoons and overhead birds will get them. I don't have racoons but have been told they'll come. It seems there are so many people that free range successfully but for every person that does, it seems there is one who has lost all their birds to predators. What to do what to do...

I hope they have enough sense to come in from the cold come winter! We have skunks, raccoons and at least 2 hawks, if they don't have enough sense to come in at night, I can't be beating at my neighbors tree to knock them out every night! I had a neighbor tell me yesterday they were wandered around on another street!!! I live in a residential area, fortunately everyone has a sense of humor....so far!

My hens also made it a habit to sleep on the coop... eventually they stoppid doing that. If you dont want them in the tree I would clip their flight feathers.
