I am planning to start keeping chickens in Bloomfield, Michigan. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with this area? I am pretty sure there is an ordinance against farm animals, but wasn't planning to ask permission. I won't have roosters...any other suggestions?

My father lives near there and actually has a pretty good sized property. I might ask him, but I would think it would be OK with the size of property he has. But, it can depend on the neighborhood as where he lives is an upper income area and they might not appreciate chickens. But, in your case, perhaps your town ordinance can tell you for sure. Is there a town hall or library where you can look that up?

Nice job finding that!

I looked through a bit of it and, so far, I haven't found anything prohibiting fowl. I did find something about only having 1 horse if the lot is less than 2 acres. You can probably look through it some more, but I think you're going to be OK unless you live on a very small lot or multi-family dwelling.

Just a heads up. Bloomfield Hunt Club released all their foxes from fox hunting a few years back and so foxes will be an issue.

How cool, introducing chickens to one of the poshest neighborhoods in the US!

Thanks for the heads up. We also have lots of coyotes and several neighborhood dogs that run loose. I am planning to have a predator-proof (I hope) coop, the type you can move around in the yard (tractor?). Still researching it all, but I think it will be a nice addition to the neighborhood! I already have pre-orders on my eggs!

That's great! And, it's always good to be in contact with your neighbors about this. That way, if there is a problem with the township, your neighbors may support you on the matter.

I hate to say this. I have "hidden" chickens and my neighbor down the street neighbor call the township. The police came and took her 22 chickens away to the Humane
Society. So according to the police the township or city rules over the state. I may be wrong but thats what I was told.
