Chickens in School??

When my son was in middle school they had chickens. They built the coop and everything.
When I was in middle school, we also had chickens too. It was a very heartwarming experience for the young kid.

Bit of a suburb/city boy here. Closest we had was my grade school setting up a small incubator with something like 10 eggs and we watched them hatch over the course of a few weeks. Unfortunately, thinking back, the teacher didn't really know what they were doing and we had a very poor hatch rate. After that, the few chicks that made it went "back to the farm."

As for actually growing chickens on school land, I would love to see that happen! It would need a decent support system from outside the school, being either a neighbor or a teacher willing to work on the weekends. Daily routine of checking food/water/eggs/health of chickens/ect and all. But yea, the kids involvement in the process could be replacing food and water while collecting eggs, but keep the support system in the background to make sure the chickens are still well taken care of if the kids decide they are bored with the chickens.

But unfortunately, this could never work in America. While the knee jerk reaction of "they will sue this project into the ground if ANYTHING goes wrong" is true, it's a bit more nuanced than that. Parents of kids in the public education system may or may not have much disposable income. So if the kid gets sick or injured from this project, it kind of forces the parent to sue or suffer a rather harsh setback in the form of healthcare bills.

Ultimately, this country has some problems to sort out before something like this could be a reality. I would love to see something like this happen though.
