Hello from the 505! My name is Jessica and I new to this AMAZING website. I have been following it for about 6 months and you all have helped me so much in my research and investigating all things Chickens! Really it was this community that gave me the confidence in myself to feel confident that I too could raise chickens. I finally decided to join because on May 26 I will be getting my first set of ladies and I am beyond excited, but I am getting ahead of myself, so I'll get to the questions.
1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, I am VERY new to chickens. I have wanted them for years now but I needed to be sure we were ready because like my other pets I knew this was a long-term commitment. On May 26 I am getting 6 beautiful girls! I did build my coop large enough for 15 but wanted to start small.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently I have 0 but less than 10 days away to have a different answer!
(3) What breeds do you have?
The girls that will be heading my way soon are Easter Egger, Splash Ameraucana, White Silkie, Black Australorp, Austra White and Welsummer
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
So far all I have done is build the brooder and the coop, but I really love to build things out of wood so that has been my favorite part so far. What I am looking forward to the most is watching the girls grow and egg production!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Well like I said above I LOVE to build things. I built my HUGE raised garden bed complete with trellises, arbors and arches. I also build my daughter her loft bed, our laundry table and cabinets, and I am in the process of remodeling one of our bathrooms and I am building the frame for our custom-made drop-in bathtub. I love gardening and I really love camping, but I am not sure if I will be able to do much camping now with the girls coming.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Well I have a VERY patient and supportive husband that let's me get crazy ideas in my head and helps me make them come to fruition, and when I say "I can totally build that myself" he just shakes his head and says "Yeah you can!" We were blessed with a perfect daughter, and she is the best part of me and my husband, We have 2 dogs (Maltipoos), 2 cats, 5 fish, 2 dwarf goats and soon 6 LOVELY ladies! I work from home as a data analyst for a hospital here in Albuquerque New Mexico... and Yes New Mexico is part of the US!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC simply by doing a google search when I first started doing research and it quickly became my go to site. I usually visit daily whenever I get a question or need further information on raising these girls. I started doing research about 6 months ago. I finally joined because I needed advice on the brooder I built (posted in forum). I feel like it is too big for 1-2 week old girls.
