Chickens in the bathtub...

Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I grew up around a couple different flocks of chickens, but we launched our own personal chicken drama this January!

How many chickens do you have right now? Four, but there's a chicken show next weekend and DH won't be there to provide wisdom and self-control. I'm thinking bantams.

What breeds do you have? Lavender Orpington, Barred Rock, [Possessed] Polish, and a Chocolate Orpington (who is giving rooster vibes...).

What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? We're pet chicken people, but the eggs are a fun bonus, especially in an area where protein availability varies by game day weekend. Hats off to the incredible people who process meat birds, but Pammy, Skittle, Margie, and Twinkle Puff are going to live long and spoiled lives. My husband and I love the personalities and I'm enjoying the coop building!

What are some of your other hobbies? I quilt, read, weld, garden, hike, bike, and make large messes "projects" around the house.

Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I'm a high school teacher and former science writer. I'm currently welding together a coop over spring break because I NEED these chickens out of my bathtub, but my husband has grown attached a favorite chicken. Recently he's started asking suspicious questions about chicken diapers and indoor coops. Updates to follow. Prayers appreciated.

Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? When I started looking for the BYC search result in my frequent chicken googles I knew it was time to join :)

Pictured: Please enjoy Marge, who knows she is perfect.
Welcome! You will love it here!

Welcome to BYC. I enjoyed your introduction and your sense of humor. You have a nice (and, after next weekend, expanding!) flock.

:frowHello and Welcome to BYC

Marge is one of the kind so beautiful and interesting looking.
Is that her natural feather head colour and shape? She looked like she just walked out of the hair salon with perfect hair do.🥰
Isn't it perfect? 🥰 This was her at 4-5 weeks. These day's she's more 80's hairband, but it's working for her.

Wait, whoa, hold on, back up the bus. You say you are WELDING a coop? Okay, everybody, on the count of three:

:bow:bow:bow All hail to Ms. Miyer! Let's give this gal her due. She is officially one awesome chicken tender! :clap:highfive: Welcome to the forum, Lady! Take pictures of your progress and consider entering it in the Coops articles when it's finished!
You're so sweet! I'll post some pics when it's done - it's just your basic hoop coop, but with fence pipe instead of wood. I'm hoping I'll be done this Saturday.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You are Jesus welding a frame for the coop and then installing something not thermally conductive over it, right?
Right! Thanks for looking out for my ladies - I'm not trying to cook them. My backyard is super shady, the coop is very well ventilated, and the tarp for the top is PPE and light colored, so I think I should be good.

I'm not past seeing that my phone thought that "Jesus welding" was an actual thing!

Loved your intro!

First off, Marge is right -- she is perfect.

Second, HURRAY for anyone who broods in the bathtub while WELDING a coop! Beyond amazing in my book.

Third, I admire your husband for considering a diapered, indoor chicken. I've had a house chicken for six years. If he gets serious, please have him contact me and I will give him a gazillion reasons why his little feathered lovely should live outdoors.

Finally, a big BYC welcome to you. Thanks for joining our group. I think you will be an amazing member!
Thank you! Honestly, my welds look like Swiss cheese, but it's been a really fun project.

Any chance you'd like to share a reason or two? I'm not sure I'm pro house-chicken and I'd love to know more from someone with experience.

:welcome

Hi, Marge is one pretty girl for sure, thanks for sharing a picture. I'd love to see your welded coop project if you'd care to share!
I'll share pictures when it's done! It's currently in about a dozen pieces in the backyard so right now it looks more like debris than a coop, but I think it's going well.
