Yesterday it was pouring out and freezing and windy but my silkies wouldn't go back in. the hens were only out because they follow the rooster every were and he don't seem to notice how awful the weather is. i tried to put them back in but they wouldn't go in even though they were drenched. Do your chickens stay out in the rain? Should i keep them inside next time it rains or should i leave it up to them?

They'll probably be fine. Mine don't mind the rain, either!

Just keep an eye on them and lock them up if they start shivering.

My chickens go out in the rain - they don't like it but they don't stay in. They can get in my stable but they hang around under the overhang and then go out in the field then back under the overhang. You won't change what they want to do unless you shut them in.

do you think silkies feathers will absorb more water and take longer to dry then other breeds

Mine always go out in the rain following right after the rooster. Awhile back we had torrential rains and Leonardo was out giving swimming lessons to the girls. The one hen who can't swim was standing in puddles up to her knees drinking to her heart's content. They all dry out at night in the house and are ready to head back out the next day.

Ours are out in the rain every time it's raining during the day. Bothers me alot more than it bothers them.
