I have read a lot about what and when to feed chickens but here in Uzbekistan I can't get all the feed etc. The locals here say feed them scratch and leftovers and we put a supplement powder into chopped carrots every day. We also put a vitamin drops into their water.

There are 5 leghorns in the back garden and they scratch for insects but it is a high walled garden so not much gets in. They have also scratched all remaining plant life away and we throw more out every now and again.

Would people feel this is ok for them? They are all laying and have had no problems yet.

You feed them what you can- you are doing the best you can!

You can give them grass clippings if you cut the grass with a lawn mower or scissors and they will love them. Make sure they are only 2-3 inches long for grown chickens and 1 inch long for baby chicks.

Scratch has maybe 10% protein so if you can give them meat scraps and whatever seeds you can, like sunflower seeds, split peas and so on, that is good. If your kitchen scraps are high in protein that is great. You can feed cooked beans leftover from your meals, and the like.

Layer feed is usually about 16% protein. If they are finding bugs and worms then they are getting more protein that way too.

You can throw them all your greens, fruit and veg (except raw potato peels, avocado peels, and things generally considered bad for chickens) and they will benefit from it. They do need greens.

Moldy food can kill chickens so you will want to stay away from that.

Thanks,

We give them bread yoghurt carrots and red cabbage everyday with a laying supplement powder but this is now making their poo blue and orange. Hope it's not too much a problem and just the food colour.

Knowledge of you local agriculture / fisheries base would help a lot. I doubt you have the waste stream we have in the USA to use as supplements but you might have interesting alternatives. Can you get any whey from folks making cheese? Fish offal could be used as supplemental protein source. Does anyone make beer in your area? IF you can get any grain of any sort, you can make it go farther by allowing it to germinate and grow a day or two before feeding it out. Do you have reliable electricity? You might be able,to attract night flying insects with UV light and setup so catch is available for consumption the next morning.
