They look almost exactly like Ladybugs... but usually these are bigger, more orangey than red and something different with the spots, I forget... biggest difference, Ladybugs don't bite but these do... oh, and they EAT plants not aphids and such...

I've been bitten by those dang things. It actually smarts!
 
And they would rather spend the winter snuggled in nooks and crannies in your house, nestled in the window sashes or under the siding or trim, dying off before spring and leaving their crunchy little shells.

Exactly... and you know they're nasty cuz neither the chickens or the ducks will touch them... :/
