Just wondering how far chickens would normally roam?

I just had 4 chickens wander into my yard. I'm on 2 acres with no neighbours to the east or west. The neighbours to the south are surrounded by dense scrub and are fenced in, and the direct neighbours to the north are on about 20 acres and don't keep chickens.

I've just done the door knock for the next two properties over to the north and nobody was home. I'll do the door knock again after 5pm when they're more likely to be home. Each neighbour has a fenced in yard so it's unlikely they've flown over too many fences. This is why I'm wondering how far they'd normally roam.

There's a fox that hangs around the area who loves the taste of chicken. He took one of my best layers recently in a day time attack (unusual for autumn). The 4 ladies were hanging around near the same coverage and tracks that I've seen the fox come and go from. I wanted to keep them safe, so I've secured them in an unused bird aviary which means they won't be able to go home to roost. I'd prefer to keep them secure until I find their owners.

Here's the 4 girls in question:

2 x Rhode Island Reds, 1 x Silver Laced Wyandotte, and 1 x Orpington.

My coop and run are visible from the road, so there's also a chance someone has taken the opportunity to dump them in the yard. Upon first inspection they all seem pretty healthy (no moulting, good weight, red healthy combs/wattles, and no visible mite activity), but they were very hungry/thirsty and got stuck into the pellets and water that I gave them.

As I started reading your post I suspected that someone was no longer able to keep them and relocated them to you.
Similar things happened to me except it was relocated cats. One was even left with a note thrown into the back yard. Very sad, but the circumstance must have been desperate. It was by a seasoned citizen by the handwriting. :(. Of course I kept and fed the cat the next 12 years. At one time it looked like I had cats coming out of my ears.:gig All that are living by me are neutered and spayed. All outdoor cats. All get food, and rabies shots, and night time shelter in garage during cold winter. None bother my chickens. :)
WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :highfive:

I thought the same thing - someone saw that you had chickens and decided to dump them onto you, figuring you'd be more likely to take them than someone who didn't have chickens.

Wow! That's quite the experience! I've rescued my cats but never had someone dump one on me. That'd be a hard thing to do (both for the dumper and dumpee).

I would suspect that you just inherited 4 nice hens!

They're all nice hens indeed. I'd hate to be taking them at someone else's expense though and want to make sure they don't belong to anyone.

Post an ad up on facebook saying you found 4 chickens. Otherwise, drive around to the closest properties and ask them if they had lost chickens. Otherwise, they might have flew off a truck while being transported. If so, keep them. Extra eggs wont hurt.

It's unlikely they'd have wondered further than the immediate two properties. The distance to travel and fences they'd have to jump would be quite the adventure for four chooks to take together! So I'm not sure a Facebook post would help. I'll definitely drive around again shortly and do another knock (for the third time today).

They might just become the newest members of my flock, but I still suspect someone at a neighbouring property might be the owners. It's getting on dark here and there's still nobody home at any of the neighbours houses. One of the girls seems in a bit of a panic and wanting to go home; she's flying into the aviary wire and seems very stressed. The others have taken to the roost in the aviary.

Awwww I hope the panicked one calms down bless her. Let us know what happens with the neighbours. If not some lovely new chickens for you!

She did calm down in the end. I normally use the aviary they're in for the cats in summertime. There's a comfy chair in there that they've all cosied-up together on top of; they look pretty snug.

There are still no neighbours home. It's 6pm and dark: prime fox-eats-chicken time. If they were mine I'd have been out looking for them long ago!

It is very odd - unless they have escaped somehow and they neighbours think they are safely in thier fox proof coop! Look forward to hearing the end of this story!
