chickens keep wasting food

i’m not too sure how this site works, but here we go. my girls recently started wasting so much food on the floor (i use a homemade feeder, just a container with holes in it that i made) i only have three chickens currently but they waste enough food to probably feed another three haha. does anyone have any advice for feeding techniques or such? i’m open to trying anything that i could make using things that i have already at home.

Welcome to BYC!! I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had this problem 😔😂 what I do now is exactly what @InterestingChickens said: Fill it up less. And it worked! They figured out how to not waste the feed all over the floor 😂 Hope that helps :)

thank you! but no matter how much feed is in the feeder, they always make such a mess ):

No. Don't mix things in their food.
We see a lot of posts where birds are wasting feed and find out on page 5 that they are mixing scratch, meal worms or other tasty treats in. The birds will dig past the good stuff to get to the treats.
