I an a first time chicken owner, and i have 9 adult hens that are not laying yet, and 13 chicks ( 7 weeks?). Yesterday was a very stormy and rainy day, so i stayed indoor with my 3 small kids all day thinking that my flock will be ok for the day, since i left them with food (the feeder was full) and water. they also have a big chicken run and a big coop. This morning i came to check on everybody after the storm. The big girls where alright but i only could count 11 chicks
i found one dead under the coop's run, it was open apart like some animals shredded him. And i found the other one under the pot (i have a big flower pot upside down for the chicks to run under during the day). This one looked like his head was missing and the ants already begun to work on him. I looked at the feeder and it was empty too! Not sure how in a day they ate the entire food ?! the coop and run is very secure and i didn't have any predator problem in a long time since i fixed it up. Before i would find my dead chickens pulled apart outside the run by animals. But finding the dead chick under the flower pot means it was something small enough to fit the tiny hole and kill it inside the pot? Another chicks?? I notice quite a few chicks seems to be Roos. Did my chickens gang up on these two and killed and ate them? Because they ran out of food that day? Or just a hate crime? Please help! Im so sad that happened
