Chickens Laying Eggs and Taking Turns

I'm curious about hens laying eggs. Usually most say you don't need many laying boxes/nests for whatever number of chickens one may have. Do chickens lay by need(you know like when you need to use the bathroom and somebody decides they want to take a bubble bath forever)or are they able to control when they feel like laying that egg?

An egg is the chickens period, so I would ask any girls you know if they can hold it in(probably can't). But hens like to lay where other hen lay, so you'l see them waiting in line for the nest box sometimes. But if they absolutely can't hold it, they probably go to a different box, which is why you sometimes see most eggs in one box, and one or two in others. So I guess it probably is like going to the bathroom. But I usualy don't go where other people go
