My chickens that I rescued from a family about 1 month ago seem to be losing their feathers. Is this due to stress from moving or do they have something else wrong with them? :barnieHow do you know if they have bugs? Thanks for the help.

Do you have a rooster that is perhaps a bit rough with them?

Re: bugs. Pick them up and part the feathers. If they have mites you will see them running around. If they have lice, look for tiny clumps of eggs at the base of the feather shaft.

I will do that. Now if they have either one of these issues, how do I treat that?

I have not had a severe mite infestation so others may be able to offer better advice. Two times in four years, I discovered a couple of mites in the nesting box and I clear everything out, dusted with some chicken mite powder and put in clean pine shavings. That did it.

A friend of mine also gave me some liquid that you drop on the back of their necks if needed, but I don't know the name of it and I never had to use it. I was lucky.

Good luck!

Did you ever find the name of that liquid?
